The first new Hungarian citizens swear in at the Hungarian Consulate in Csíkszereda

The first new Hungarian citizens swore in at the Hungarian Consulate in Csíkszereda, Romania. Among those became Hungarian citizens, there are the leaders of MPP party including Jenő Szász. The new citizenship act that came into effect on January 1st allows Hungarian ethnic groups living abroad to become Hungarian citizens without the residency requirements.

The ceremony took place in the presence of László Kövér, the speaker of the Hungarian parliament, Oszkár Füzes Hungarian Ambassador to Romania and and several other dignitaries.

After the official event Kövér said “A new era begins today, as the Hungarian government not only feels but takes responsibility for Hungarians living in the lost territories”.

More swearing in ceremonies are scheduled for tomorrow; the guest of the tomorrow ceremony will be deputy-prime minister Zsolt Semjén.

Deputy-Chairman of the European Parliament László Tőkés and twenty-five members of the Hungarian Youth Council swore in at the Kolozsvár consulate and became Hungarian citizens in the eve of the National Holiday.
After the ceremony, László Tőkés said “Ninety-one years ago our nation was partitioned and now it reunites without changing the current borders; today, I was part of the joyful moment”.

In the first two months of the year, about 50 thousand applications have been handed in at the various Hungarian embassies around the world.
